SHINDIG! THE BEER. THAT’S RIGHT READERS! BEER -www.shindig-magazine.com

Join our campaign to get Shindig! on more than just magazine shelves. JON ‘MOJO’ MILLS leads the charge

The Kelham Island Brewery in Sheffield, that’s Yorkshire in the wonderful North of England for our foreign readers, has just brewed the first of two Shindig! ales (which as beer drinking writers makes us all extremely happy).

At time of press, we were unable to procure samples for tasting but we have it on good authority from our Sheffield based Shindig! scribe Jeanette Leech that Kelham Island Brewery make the best beer North of London. The first ale, which will be available from March, will use the title of our magazine along with the lovely cover design from this year’s Annual No.2 and a second ale will soon follow using the wild Pete Fowler illustration that opened our garage special Psychotic Reaction.

Kelham has also informed us that you can get your local pub to stock both these fine real ales so please get on to your nearest landlord and make this happen. You can also email the brewery too and request for the ales to be bottled, which would be a magnificent thing to see Shindig! on the shelves of off licenses and supermarkets across the country.

For more info on both ales visit kelhambrewery.co.uk, and to join our campaign to get Shindig! beer bottled visit our For Lovers of Shindig! Facebook group

 **Audit Ale Feast**

Feasts were often held to celebrate the presentation of a set of annual accounts, then known as an Audit. The Cutler’s Feast in Sheffield that was first held in 1625 was for this purpose as were the feasts held in Cambridge and Oxford Colleges. Some of these feasts dated back to the thirteenth century. The university colleges that had their own breweries usually brewed a strong beer to be presented at the feast and these were sometimes called Audit Ales. As the university breweries closed during the last century commercial breweries were called upon to brew the audit ales for the feasts.

Reading the history of the feasts and the ales Dave Wickett, who has connections with both Sheffield Universities, thought it would be a good idea to revive the concept of the Audit Feast and of the Audit Ale.

The first such feast was held at The Fat Cat on September 24th 2009 and along with a number of beers, the feast concluded with a Yorkshire Cheese board and a 10.7% Special Audit Ale. A one third glass was drunk by all diners, a pin went on sale at the bar and all the Feast participants were given one of the limited edition bottles.

Attending the feast were 8 from The University of Sheffield, 8 from Kelham Island Brewery and 8 guests including The Master Cutler, The Deputy Lord Mayor, The Rt Honourable Richard Caborn MP, Andy Cullen the Sheffield Camra Chairman and Tim Hampson

**Kelham Island brews another spectacular commemorative ale " Jack Reacher " see below for the full story **

NTERNATIONALLY renowned crime writer Lee Child came up with a thrilling evening at one of Sheffield's foremost real ale pubs.

Glasses were raised at the Fat Cat in Kelham Island as the former Sheffield University graduate launched the Jack Reacher Scholarships, named after his most famous character.

Lee, whose books are now so popular that one is sold every second, is giving 52 students £2,000 each to help them through their studies.

He met the recipients at a reception at the Fat Cat – and to celebrate the occasion, the pub brewed a Jack Reacher ale, which he is taking home to New York.

The 54-year-old writer, born Jim Grant, studied law at the University of Sheffield in the mid-Seventies, is a visiting professor and returned to be presented with an honorary degree. In addition his brother Andrew Grant, also a crime writer, was awarded a degree.

The evening at the Fat Cat gave him the chance to chat informally with the 25 undergraduates and 27 postgraduates receiving the Jack Reacher scholarships, named after the fictional retired American military policeman.

The scholarships were awarded to talented students from each of the university's five faculties to provide them with financial assistance during their studies.

Lee Child said: "I was very happy to help out – my generation went to university for free and I believe in giving something back.

"It's upsetting to see bright and dedicated students contemplate giving up their studies because of financial pressures. Just like my literary character Jack Reacher, if I see things that are wrong, I want to put them right."

Prof Dominic Shellard, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Affairs, described it as an incredibly generous donation.

"Lee was able to meet some of the students who will be benefiting from the new Jack Reacher scholarships and it was great to witness first hand what a positive impact this financial support will have on their education and future careers.

"It is also fantastic to see one of our very own students, who has gone on to achieve great things himself, give something back to his former university to help current students."

The pub venue was chosen as a result of him meeting Fat Cat and Kelham Island Brewery owner Dave Wickett through the university's alumni association.

"He said he would love to have a couple of hours chatting with the students, so we had a reception in the Fat Cat and we brewed a beer named after Jack Reacher," said Dave.

"He had half an hour looking around the brewery and we talked about the beer. He was absolutely thrilled by the whole thing. It was a fabulous evening."

The beer is mid-strength and slighty dark – an "American red ale" – and is now on draught at the Alma Street pub. "He asked for a certain type of beer," said Dave. "He said: 'make it punchy'. He loved it."

The informal occasion brought out stories about Lee's Sheffield days, including the time he went back to his former bedsit in Crookes.

Kelham Pays Tribute to Professor Bob Boucher

Dave and all the staff were very sorry to hear news of the death of Professor Bob Boucher the recently retired Vice-Chancellor of The University of Sheffield. Bob was a good friend of the brewery and drank in The Fat Cat on a number of occassions.

In 2005 Bob and Dave Wickett collaborated on the brewing of The University of Sheffield Centenary Beer and Bob was delighted to visit the brewery on the day of it's first brew and help "mash in the beer"

Bob will be sadly missed by us all

Fat Cat Boss Dave Wins Real Ale Promotion Award

27th February 2009

SHEFFIELD pub and brewery owner Dave Wickett was honoured last night for his "outstanding contribution" to the promotion of real ale in the city.
Local members of the Campaign for Real Ale gave him a special award at theirannual presentation evening at Thornbridge Hall near Ashford-in-the-Water in the Peak District.

Dave, a former Sheffield Polytechnic llecturer, opened the Fat Cat pub in Kelham Island 28 years ago to offer drinkers an alternative to premises owned by the big brewers.

Camra said it was "amongst the first real ale showcase pubs and one of the few true freehouses at the time".

It sold traditional scrumpy and unusual bottled beers, excluded music and electronic machines to encourage conversation, set aside the first no smoking room in the area and offered good home cooking with a vegetarian choice. In its first year, The Fat Cat was voted Sheffield's first Pub Of The Year.

Moreover, it went on to become a catalyst for a real ale trail which was celebrated last week in the success of the Kelham Island Tavern as Camra's national Pub of the Year.

Kelham Island Brewery was opened next to the Fat Cat, winning Champion Beer of Britain with its Pale Rider in 2004, and is currently busier than ever with plans for an extension.
